When I was in Istanbul recently we met a shop owner who as a young teen walked all the way from Afghanistan to Istanbul. It took him eight months but he made it.
Ironically, the day after we got back 60 Minutes aired an episode called “The Long and Dangerous Journey” (air date: 5/19). It featured many of the thousands of young boys from Afghanistan who are risking it all for a better life.

They’re inspirational, and they don’t even need anyone else to see that. They just want opportunity and they take it upon themselves to get it without blaming anyone else.
